By Kelly R. Hubbard:
The 74th Assembly is one of several open Assembly seats in Orange County this year and it happens to be the only one that has two Republicans facing off in November. Voters in this district, which stretches from south Huntington Beach all the way down to Laguna Beach, will have a GOP candidate regardless of who wins in two months. The real question is will voters have a liberal tax and spender representing them in Sacramento, or a pro-growth Reagan conservative? The top two GOP candidates who emerged out of June are former Newport Beach Mayor Keith Curry and current Huntington Beach Mayor Matthew Harper.
(Mayor Keith Curry and the $140 million “Taj Mahal of Newport”)
For former Newport Mayor Keith Curry, the burden to convince voters that he’s a real conservative is a tall order to bear. Curry must defend a record that is squarely to the left of Harper, particularly on fiscal issues and on immigration. Under Curry’s watch on the Newport Beach City Council, spending went up dramatically with the expansion of what locals called the “Taj Mahal of Newport!” What was proposed at the time as an estimated $60 million dollar expansion and renovation of their City Hall, ballooned into a whopping $140 million dollar project, leaving local tax payers to foot the bill!
Taj Mahal was the most expensive City Hall renovation in Newport Beach history and it has been regarded as one of the most wasteful municiple spending projects in County history! To this day, Curry still defends the outrages spending of Taj Mahal and he is still ignoring the concerns and complaints from his former constituents about it. He even went out of his way during the ribbon cutting ceremonies to denounce the citizen’s groups that were critical of how he and the other council members spent their tax dollars. Read below!
You may recall, Newport Beach is the same city that received national attention a few years ago for paying their Life Guards over $100,000 a year salaries and paying their City Manager $300,000 a year. Newport Beach elected officials have a history of being bad stewards of the tax payer’s money and Keith Curry has been a major part of that in recent years!
Curry also supports amnesty and said as much at a local Tea Party Meeting from earlier this year. I’ve pasted the video of that meeting below. He even made the outrages claim on video that enforcing our immigration laws was tantamount to marching illegal immigrants to the border “at the point of a bayonet!” Curry even admitted to supporting the Lincoln Club’s Immigration proposal, which many folks believe amounts to amnesty. Watch below!
In addition, Curry voted with a majority of the council to increase the public tideland fees, or what many called the “Dock Tax!” This Dock Tax, which the state has a role in mandating, was a rent increase on local harbor residents and on boat owners who parked their boats in Newport bay. Curry still refers to the Dock Tax as a “Fee,” which is a common euphemism that many politicians use to hide what they’re really imposing on the public! By increasing the dock tax fee, Curry broke his tax pledge to the citizens of Newport! The Dock Tax went down as one of the largest tax increases in city history!
To make matters worse, Curry also has a history of taking public employee Union contributions for his campaign! Curry’s support from Unions became widely known when the Orange County Lincoln Club, an influencial pro-business donor organization, recinded it’s coveted endorsement of him. The Lincoln Club’s unprecidented move to pull their endorsement of Curry, who had been a 25 year member of theirs, was primarily due to his breaking of a pledge to reject Union money. This was yet another broken promise from Keith Curry!
In addition to taking thousands of dollars in public employee Union contributions, Curry has also taken over $4,000 from liberal Republican Billionaire donor Charles Munger Jr! Munger has a long history of supporting only liberal republican candidates in order to undermine conservative candidates in primaries. This is the same Charles Munger who poured hundreds of thousands of dollars at the 11th hour to help Neel Kashkari’s campaign against the conservative Tim Donnelly in the GOP gubernatorial primary last June.
One of the more disturbing aspects of Keith Curry’s record in Newport Beach, is his role in regulating and pushing to ban the beloved tradition of beach bonfire rings in the city! This has become a very hot topic and a serious point of contention for many coastal residents throughout the 74th. Curry voted to remove these pits on the beaches of Newport, and his actions, along with the actions of his fellow nanny-statists on the city council, opened the door for state regulators to begin banning this major part of our culture in coastal OC! Read below! Curry even irresponsibly sterotyped folks who enjoy beach fire rings as “gangbangers” at a recent debate forum! That elitist comment by Curry probably gave us the clearest indication behind his motives to ban these pits! Read below! In addition to his out of touch comment, Curry has opposed bi-partisan efforts in Sacramento to keep our fire pits from being regulated or removed altogether.
As you can see, the record of former Mayor Keith Curry is a record of higher taxes, big spending, and more government regulation! It is not a record that the good citizens of the 74th want any part of in their next Assembly Representative! Regardless of the misguided endorsement from those on the Orange County Register Editorial Board, it’s important for voters to get a clear picture of Curry’s real record while serving in Newport Beach!
Keith Curry is just another tax and spend liberal who voters in this district can’t trust! I have no doubt that if elected, Keith Curry would be one of those Republicans who would side with the Left in Sacramento on issues such as tax increases and spending! I think it’s safe to say that Keith Curry would be another Tom Harmon type in the California State Legislature! The good folks in the 74th deserve better!
I have no doubt that Huntington Beach Mayor Matthew Harper is the best choice for folks in the 74th! Harper has been a longtime Reagan conservative and he believes that government is best when it’s small and limited! As a pro-business and pro-growth conservative, Harper has never voted for a tax increase and as fought hard over the years to keep property taxes from being raised!
Unlike Curry, Harper has never gone back on his tax pledge and he has always been straight with the voters in Huntington Beach. Harper is also endorsed by the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association PAC and he has the support of Congressman Dana Rohrabacher!
Matthew Harper opposes all and any effort to ban our bonfires, and unlike Curry, he supports legislative efforts by one of our local representatives to solve this issue and to keep our fire-pits out of the hands of regulators!
Harper is very much against the Huntington Beach plastic bag ban and has been a solid no vote on allowing the city to charge local residents that ten cent fee! I’m very confident in saying that Harper would be one of those who would oppose the statewide ban that is about to be imposed on all California merchants and consumers.
Unlike Curry, Harper doesn’t receive contributions from public Unions, nor is he supported by liberal billionaire benfactor Charles Munger! We can trust that Harper will go to Sacramento and fight the Unions on pension reform and getting a handle on our enormous unfunded liabilities!
On the issue of Immigration, Harper believes in enforcement first and he opposes any form of Amnesty! Harper does not support the Lincoln Club’s immigration proposal and he believes in a strong and secure border! Curry on the other hand, has come out in favor of the Lincoln Club’s plan and actually believes it’s immoral to deport folks who are here illegally! Watch the video below!
There are so many night versus day differences between the liberal Keith Curry and the conservative Matt Harper, that I encourage you to do your own research and discover it for yourself! I’ve pasted a full detail of Curry’s record below, including articles and pieces on his time in Newport Beach local government. I’ve pasted the websites of both men below for you to look over and examine. Please take the time to do the necessary research on the candidates and on this race!
After a thorough examination of the facts, I’m sure you’ll conclude, as so many others have, that Keith Curry cannot be trusted to represent our conservative values in the legislature! Matthew Harper is the only logical choice in November!
The 74th Assembly District includes: Huntington Beach (southern half), Costa Mesa, Newport Beach, Irvine, Laguna Woods, and Laguna Beach. I’ve pasted a map of the district below.
Now more than ever, it’s important that Orange County maintain solid conservative representation in Sacramento! It’s important that we don’t allow our vote to go to an indivudual who will just join the Democrats and betray our trust! Let’s elect a real leader who has a history of standing on princple, no matter the cost! If you or someone you know lives in the 74th Assembly district, I encourage you to cast your vote for an authentic conservative, one who will fight for our values all the way! Vote mainstreet values! Vote Matthew Harper for State Assembly! Read below!
