With the general election fast approaching, we here at O.C. Tea Party Blog would like to give you our recommendations for national, state, and local elections, including local measures and state-wide propositions. Below are a list of political offices and propositions that will appear on your November 4th ballot. As you’ll notice, the list of candidates we support is not a long one! As Tea Party Conservatives, and NOT Republican Party cheerleaders, its our obligation to scrutinize those running for office and only support those candidates who have and will continue to adhere to conservative principles.
Where No Recommendation is listed, in most cases, you can safely assume that we believe that neither candidate in a particular race, whether it be Democrat or Republican, exemplifies Tea Party/Constitutional Conservative values, or has promoted those values through a consistent record of accomplishment and or support.
Our Recommendations are based largely on our examination of a candidate’s record and his or her views on the issues. In some races, you’ll notice I’ve written underneath a brief commentary or analysis on why we’ve decided to recommend or not recommend a particular candidate or candidates. I encourage you to use that information to help you make a thoughtful and intelligent decision when filling out your ballot.
These are just recommendations and are only the views of the O.C. Tea Party Blog and not necessarily the recommendations of any other Tea Party group in Orange County. Feel free to share these recommendations with others and if you have any questions or comments on these recommendations or on any other election related issue feel free to contact me via e-mail at the very end below. In addition, check out my regular postings on the candidates and on the general election at OC Tea Party Blog.com or follow us on Twitter @OCTeaPartyBlog. God Bless and please pray for discernment to make the right decision on election day! Read below! Thanks, Kelly Hubbard
LOCAL (Orange and some overlapping Counties)
*55th AD: Ling Ling Chang (R) vs. Gregg Fritchle (D) (OPEN SEAT) (Diamond Bar, Rowland Heights, Walnut, LaHabra, Brea, Yorba Linda, Placentia, Chino Hills)
*65th AD: Young Kim (R) vs. Sharon Quirk-Silva (D) (Fullerton, Stanton, La Palma, Cypress, Anaheim, Buena Park, Hawaiian Gardens)
RECOMMENDATION: Young Kim (R)
This former Staffer to Congressman Ed Royce is taking on a first-term liberal incumbent Assemblywoman and former Fullerton Mayor named Sharon Quirk-Silva. Silva won this swing Assembly district by a hair in 2012! In the short time that she’s represented the 65th, Silva has voted time and again against the values and views of her constituents! Her votes include: Voting YES to allow non-citizens to serve on Juries, voting YES on the so-called transgender bathroom bill, voting NO to halt funding for high-speed rail, and voting YES to give drivers licenses to illegal aliens! She also received an “F” grade from the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association and she received a 50% rating from CalChamber on job killer bills! Young Kim represents the best hope to win this seat back from the far-left and restore it back to the conservative column! Based on my review of Kim, I think she’ll represent the good folks of the 65th well and I’m confident that she’ll vote consistently conservative while serving in Sacramento! Young Kim for State Assembly! Read below!
*68th AD: Donald Wagner (R) vs. Anne Cameron (D) (Orange, Anaheim, Villa Park, Tustin, Lake Forest, Irvine, Canyon Country)
*69th AD: Sherry Walker (R) vs. Tom Daly (D) (Santa Ana)
*72nd AD: Travis Allen (R) vs. Joel Block (D) (Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley, Garden Grove, Westminster, Midway City, Seal Beach, Los Alamitos, Rossmoor)
*73rd AD: Bill Brough (R) vs. Wendy Gabriella (D) (OPEN SEAT) (Rancho Santa Margarita, Mission Viejo, Coto de Caza, Dana Point, Aliso, San Juan Capo, Laguna Niguel)
*74th AD: Matthew Harper (R) vs. Keith Curry (R) (OPEN SEAT) (Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Costa Mesa, Irvine, Laguna Beach, Laguna Woods)
RECOMMENDATION: Matthew Harper (R)
Former Newport Beach Mayor Keith Curry would be a disaster for this district or any other! Despite claiming to be a conservative, Curry has a record in Newport Beach government of supporting tax increases, voting for excessive spending, and favoring burdensome government regulation on the citizenry! He also has a history of breaking his pledges with the voters and going back on his promises on such things as not raising taxes and taking public employee Union contribution money! It’s important to mention that Curry is also supportive of amnesty for illegal aliens! There is a reason why Matthew Harper has support from the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, from Congressman Dana Rohrabacher, and from the California Republican Assembly! Conservatives in the 74th trust Harper to go to Sacramento and vote their values! Harper has a consistent record as an elected leader in Huntington Beach for over a decade of standing on his conservative principles! Unlike Curry, Harper has never voted for a tax increase and he believes that government shouldn’t be extravagant with the people’s money! There is a clear choice in this race and Harper is the only one we can trust! If you or someone you know lives in the 74th Assembly District, I strongly encourage you to vote for the only authentic conservative in this race: Matthew Harper for State Assembly! Please read and share the article below!
*32nd SD: Mario Guerra (R) vs. Tony Mendoza (D) (OPEN SEAT) (Buena Park, Cerritos, Hawaiian Gardens, La Habra Heights, Norwalk, Bellflower, Downey, Sante Fe Springs)
*34th SD: Janet Nguyen (R) vs. Jose Solario (D) (OPEN SEAT) (Long Beach, Seal Beach, Los Alamitos, Huntington, Fountain Valley, Westminster, Garden Grove, Santa Ana)
*36th SD: Pat Bates (R) (RUNNING UNOPPOSED/OPEN SEAT) (Rancho Santa Margarita, Coto de Caza, Laguna Hills, Ladera Ranch, Mission Viejo, Dana Point, San Juan Capo, Camp Pendelton, Oceanside, Carlsbad)
O.C. BOARD of SUPERVISORS (non-partisan race)
*District 2: Allan Mansoor (R) vs. Michelle Steel (R) (OPEN SEAT) (Newport, Huntington, Fountain Valley, Costa Mesa, Seal Beach, Los Al, Cypress, Buena Park, Stanton)
*District 5: Robert Ming (R) vs. Lisa Bartlett (R) (OPEN SEAT) (Lake Forest, Laguna Beach, Laguna Woods, Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel, Dana Point, San Juan Capo, RSM)
RECOMMENDATION: Robert Ming (R)
U.S. HOUSE of REPRESENTATIVES
*38th CD: Ben Campos (R) vs. Linda Sanchez (D) (Cerritos, Artesia, Lakewood, Hawaiian Gardens, La Palma, La Mirada, Sante Fe Springs, Pico Rivera, Whittier)
RECOMMENDATION: Ben Campos (R)
*39th CD: Ed Royce (R) vs. Pete Anderson (D) (Diamond Bar, Rowland Heights, Hacienda Heights, La Habra, Yorba Linda, Placentia, Brea, Buena Park, Fullerton)
RECOMMENDATION: Ed Royce (R)
*45th CD: Mimi Walters (R) vs. Drew Leavens (D) (OPEN SEAT) (Anaheim Hills, Villa Park, Tustin, Irvine, Mission Viejo, Coto De Caza, Lake Forest, Trabuco Canyon)
*46th CD: Adam Nick (R) vs. Loretta Sanchez (D) (Anaheim, Orange, Garden Grove, Santa Ana)
*47th CD: Andy Whallon (R) vs. Alan Lowenthal (D) (Long Beach, Lakewood, Signal Hill, Avalon, Los Alamitos, Westminster, Midway City, Stanton, Buena Park)
*48th CD: Dana Rohrabacher (R) vs. Suzanne Joyce Savary (D) (Seal Beach, Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley, Newport Beach, Costa Mesa, Laguna Beach, Aliso Viejo)
RECOMMENDATION: Dana Rohrabacher (R)
*49th CD: Darrell Isaa (R) vs. David Peiser (R) (Dana Point, Ladera Ranch, San Juan Capistrano, San Clemente, Camp Pendelton, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Rancho Santa Fe)
O.C. ASSESSOR (non-partisan race)
*Claude Parrish (R) vs. Webster Guillory (NPP) (County-wide)
RECOMMENDATION: Claude Parrish (R)
Incumbent Assessor Webster Guillory was recently charged with three felony counts of fraud related to his re-election bid. Former Board of Equalization member Claude Parrish has the endorsement of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association PAC and is supported by dozens of fiscal conservatives throughout Orange County! I think he would make a great County Assessor! Claude Parrish for Assessor!
SUPERIOR COURT JUDGE (office no.14/non-partisan race)
*Kevin Haskins (R) vs. Kenneth “KC” Jones (R) (OPEN SEAT) (County-wide)
CITY COUNCIL (various races throughout O.C.)
We recommend the following 11 conservative city council candidates. Some of these folks are running for re-election and some have never held public office before. We believe these folks represent strong conservative values, especially as it relates to fiscal matters in local municipal government! Please support these candidates if you live in one these cities! I will post a more in-depth analysis on these candidates and these city-council races in a future blog piece! Stay tuned! Read below.
*RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA: John Webb, Jesse Petrilla
*SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO: Derek Reeve
*IRVINE: Lynn Schott
*COSTA MESA: Jim Righeimer
*HUNTINGTON BEACH: Erik Peterson, Lyn Semeta
*FOUNTAIN VALLEY: Mark McCurdy
*ANAHEIM: Tom Tait, James Vanderbilt
*FULLERTON: Sean Paden
RECOMMENDATION: Vote NO
Creating a local Ethics Commission seems much more reasonable and will probably be more effective rather than out-sourcing enforcement to state bureaucracy! It’s worth looking into a little more, but so far I recommend a NO vote on this Measure!
RECOMMENDATION: Vote YES
*Neel Kashkari (R) vs. Jerry Brown (D)
RECOMMENDATION: Skip this portion of the ballot!
I vehemently recommend that folks skip this portion of their ballots! Leaving the Governor’s portion on your ballots blank this year, will send a very loud and clear message to the CA GOP that you’ve had enough of them pushing RINO candidates on us, especially for such crucial offices! Had the GOP and their progressive donor allies not steamrolled over the authentic conservative in the primary Tim Donnelly, this race to challenge Jerry Brown would have likely been much more competitive and Brown would’ve been forced to defend his atrocious record! Since the GOP establishment decided to use scorched-earth tactics to keep Tim Donnelly from the top-two slot, and since they decided to nominate a carbon-copy of Brown on almost every single issue, this race will now likely end in a double-digit defeat for the state party and more specifically for Kashkari! I’ve pasted below a very detailed analysis of why I think conservatives should sit out this race based on principle and out of protest! Voting for Neel Kashkari, no matter how desperate we are to defeat Jerry Brown, would be a blatant betrayal of our conservative principles! By voting for Kashkari, you would be selling out your soul to give this RINO on extra vote! Keep in mind, this guy spent the entire primary season trashing and falsely labeling our Tea Party candidate Donnelly as a racist! If you remember, Kashkari didn’t even once seek the endorsement of conservatives and now he expects us to be loyal to him! Fat chance! Send a clear message to the GOP and keep this portion of the ballot blank! Let them know that you’ve had enough of RINO candidates! Read below!
*Ron Nehring (R) vs. Gavin Newsome (D)
SECRETARY of STATE
*Pete Peterson (R) vs. Alex Padilla (D) (OPEN SEAT)
RECOMMENDATION: Pete Peterson (R)
Pepperdine University Public Policy expert Pete Peterson is the only candidate in this race we can trust to reform our inefficient election system and to streamline the state’s business registration system. Unlike his opponent, Peterson doesn’t want to use this office as a stepping stone to advance his political career and he genuinely wants to improve public engagement with government. He also understands the need to reform the election process by deterring and preventing fraud and corruption. In fact, Linda Paine of the Election Integrity Project is on record saying that Peterson was the only SOS candidate in the primary to accept her invitation to discuss and share evidence on California’s broken election system! The only one! Pete Peterson wants to enact specific reforms to our election system, which includes developing a state-wide voter database. California is currently the only state in the U.S. to not have a state-wide voter database! A voter database would go a long way to help identify voter fraud more quickly and it would help prevent voters from crossing county lines to commit fraud. Creating a voter database is just one of the ways our state can restore integrity and confidence back to our election system. I’m confident that Pete Peterson would make an excellent Secretary of State and we can trust him to not continue the current practice of using the office in a partisan way! Pete Peterson for California Secretary of State! Read below.
*Ronald Gold (R) vs. Kamala Harris (D)
*Greg Conlon (R) vs. John Chiang (D)
*Ashley Swearengin (R) vs. Betty Yee (D) (OPEN SEAT)
Ashley Swearengin is said to be the new rising star of the state GOP, but she’s certainly not the rising star of conservatives! As the Mayor of Fresno, this woman is an ardent supporter of Jerry Brown’s bullet train and she refuses to rule out the possibility that she might even vote for Brown this November! Believe it or not, her opposition to Kashkari isn’t based on the fact that he’s too liberal, Swearengin actually believes Kashkari isn’t liberal enough, particularly on the bullet train issue! She is also said to be very favorable to Agenda 21 policies and the so-called smart growth movement! In addition, she’s in favor of amnesty and was one of Obama’s hand-picked Republican elected leaders to attend his amnesty speech in Nevada a few years ago! This is another race to sit out!
*Ted Gaines (R) vs. Dave Jones (D)
RECOMMENDATION: Ted Gaines (R)
SUPERINTENDENT of PUBLIC INSTRUCTION (non-partisan race)
*Marshall Tuck (D) vs. Tom Torlarkson (D)
BOARD of EQUALIZATION, 4th DISTRICT (District Counties: Orange, Riverside, San Diego, Imperial, San Bernardino (portion))
*Diane Harkey (R) vs. Nader Shahatit (D) (OPEN SEAT)
For state ballot measures this year, I recommend that you take a look below and follow the recommendations from the California Tea Party Groups Coalition! I’ve examined these propositions and the analysis by this organization and I trust what they say! We concur with these recommendations completely! Probably from my perspective, the most important of the Propositions are Prop. 1, which we recommend a NO vote on, and Prop. 46, which we also recommend voting NO! Read below!
*STATE SUPREME COURT: Goodwin Liu
RECOMMENDATION: Vote NO
You may be surprised to know this, but Goodwin Liu was nominated by Obama in early 2010 and again in 2011 to serve on the ninth circuit court of appeals! He is a former UC Berkley Law Professor, who was so incredibly liberal, that even some Senate Democrats joined Republicans in blocking attempts to end their filibuster of him! Obama had to withdrawal his nomination, not once but twice! Even the liberal former Obama Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel had reservations about nominating him because of his extreme views! Liu is a radical pro-abortion supporter, who also believes in an “evolving” Constitution! After a 16 month battle to keep Liu from the ninth circuit, Obama finally dropped his nomination. Shortly after that, Jerry Brown appointed him to our state’s highest court! I’ve pasted tons of info about Liu below! I strongly encourage you to vote NO on him!! This guy has no business serving on the bench! Vote NO on Goodwin Liu for re-election to the Supreme Court!
*STATE SUPREME COURT: Mariano-Florentino Cuellar
RECOMMENDATION: Vote NO
According to JudgePedia below, this guy was Co-Chair of the Obama/Biden Transition’s Immigration Policy Working Group! Enough said!! Read below.
*STATE SUPREME COURT: Kathryn Mickle Werdegar
RECOMMENDATION: Vote NO
The little amount of research that I did on her showed that she voted with the majority on the court to overturn the original law that Californians passed in 2000 to define marriage as between one man and one woman only, also known as Prop. 22! She also voted against a motion filed by those defending the law to reconsider and to put a halt on gay marriages until after the voters had made their decision on Prop. 8, which appeared on the ballot the following November! Despite the fact that she was appointed by a Republican Governor, namely Pete Wilson, I haven’t seen too much evidence to conclude that she is an outstanding Justice who follows the original intent of our state Constitution! I recommend a NO vote on her!
NOTE: (For more information on Judges, including the Court of Appeal, 4th Appellate District Judges on the ballot, please refer to Craig Huey’s Judge Voter Guide website below! Huey rates these Judges on a Judicial / Qualification Index rating. He seems to think that most of these Judges are worth voting Yes on and the only two who received low ratings are “Richard D. Fybel” for Division 3 and “Kathleen E. O’Leary” also for Division 3! He recommends that we vote NO on these two and vote YES on the rest! Read below!)
Below, I’ve listed three solid Constitutional Conservatives running for U.S. Senate this year! Two of these races are among the most hotly-contested races this year and could very well end up effecting the balance of power in the U.S. Senate! These are the only three Tea Party type candidates who deserve our support in the general! I encourage you to donate to their campaigns and help them anyway you can! I’m confident that these three would be strong allies to Ted Cruz and Mike Lee if they win their elections! I’ve pasted their websites and articles below!
*Ben Sasse (R) NEBRASKA (OPEN SEAT)
*Joni Ernst (R) IOWA (OPEN SEAT)
*Rob Maness (R) LOUISIANA
Governor Scott Walker deserves our full support for re-election and Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott deserves our whole-hearted support to defeat and push back the progressive forces who want to flip Texas blue! Read below!
*Scott Walker (R) WISCONSIN
*Gregg Abott (R) TEXAS (OPEN SEAT)
For more information on Conservatives running for Congress, please visit the websites below! These Tea Party organizations have listed many House candidates that they’ve endorsed this year for being unapologetic Constitutional Conservatives! These websites below are an excellent resource to find out which Congressional Candidates merit our support! There are many exciting conservatives running for Congress this year and many more who deserve to be re-elected! Please support our outstanding House candidates! Read below!
