Make no mistake about it, the results of last Tuesday’s City Council elections in Huntington Beach was a direct repudiation of the progressive nanny state policies and of the city’s aggressive push toward developing high-density housing! Voters in Surf City tossed-out two progressive incumbents who were the deciding votes on both the city’s controversial plastic bag ban and on the out-of-control development of high-density condos!
These high-density developments have been a source of contention and controversy in many Orange County cities these days. These projects tend to put the interests of big business developers and crony special interests, over the best interests of the taxpaying residents in those cities! You may remember, just a month ago, residents in Yorba Linda attempted to recall their Mayor and a sitting City Council official over this very issue!
These projects exacerbate traffic congestion, increase crime, blight our neighborhoods, and urbanize our bedroom communities! Very little good comes out of high density developments! Proponents will claim that these developments increase tax revenue for their cities. Opponents of high density, which mostly consists of residents and taxpayers, argue that the long and short term negative effects of these projects outweigh any positives that may occur! These projects are also part of a larger environmental agenda to increase the populations in our towns and many of these projects can be tied indirectly to the whole Agenda 21 movement.
In Huntington Beach, this issue, in addition to the plastic bag ban, has caused voters to reach the boiling point! Local Huntington Beach business owner Erik Peterson capitalized on this issue in his campaign and was one of a handful who won a seat on the Council last week! Peterson, along with fellow conservative candidate Lyn Semeta, made the high-density issue and the plastic bag ban central themes in their races!
Both Erik and Lyn serve on the city’s Planning Commission and both have been tough critics of the current Council’s push to develop these high-density nightmares! Erik and Lyn were the pro-freedom and pro-citizen candidates on the ballot this year and both scored very high with the voters last week! Unfortunately for Lyn, she didn’t quite make it, tying for fifth place with one of the liberal incumbents!
Erik did prevail however and was swept in with three other republicans, all of whom may end up being almost as bad as those who were tossed out! Two of the three, local Public Works Commissioner Billy O’ Connell and Realtor Barbara Delgleize, were both heavily supported by the Police and Firefighters Unions and both don’t seem to take these issues very seriously! The third republican was the establishment’s choice in this race and was strongly supported by the pro-amnesty and pro-big developer Chamber of Commerce! It appears Erik will be the only sensible new voice on the City Council!
Peterson’s election and the defeat of the two progressive incumbents marks a very significant victory in the grassroots efforts to stop many of these local nanny state laws and put a halt to high density in our cities! Voters in HB also tossed-out their incumbent City Attorney, which also appears to be a reaction to high-density and the bag ban!
These defeats should send a very loud and direct message to City Council officials throughout Orange County and to the politicians and to their crony big developers! The politicians have officially been put on notice regarding local public opinion of these projects!
We congratulate Erik Peterson for his win and we’re committed to standing with him and the other sensible member on the Council Dave Sullivan as they both fight to restore liberty and bring back economic prosperity to Huntington Beach! There is no doubt, voters in Surf City made good choices last Tuesday! Read below!
