Last night’s victory celebration at John Moorlach’s campaign headquarters in Newport Beach was a gathering of jubilant supporters, expressing joy for the pay-off for all the hard work and perseverance it took to get their conservative, anti-establishment candidate in this race to victory!
With a final result well beyond what many were expecting, the Moorlach campaign victory party was a celebration for beating back the powerful GOP establishment, an establishment which circled it’s wagons very early on around their Union-funded chosen one Assemblyman Donald P. Wagner!
Despite the Unions and Mr. Wagner spending a combined total of over a half a million dollars on this race, John Moorlach, with the grassroots at his side, not only managed to defeat them, but he also avoided a May run-off election by winning slightly over 50% of the vote! According to Neal Kelley’s website, the final totals as of this morning were: 50.4% for Moorlach and 44.1% for Wagner. It was a close election, but a comfortable enough margin for John and his supporters to feel confident and satisfied with their victory!
This crushing defeat must have been a hard let down for Don and his establishment supporters, supporters like Dana Rohrabacher, Jim Silva, Mimi Walters, and even our political D.A. Tony Rackauckas! These folks, and many other local establishment politicians, spent the better part of the last two months trashing Moorlach, participating in robo-calls, op-eds, mailers, and thousands of dollars in hit-pieces, all in an attempt to deflect attention away from Wagner’s Union-support and his pro-amnesty record!
Thankfully, voters remembered John’s almost heroic reform efforts in saving this county from a real fiscal cliff and they remembered his Paul Revere type warnings back in the nineties, raising the alarm bells about our coming bankruptcy! Voters saw through and rejected the thousands of dollars in Union-funded hit-jobs, realizing that it was a complete contradiction from what they remembered in John’s over 15 year career as our former Treasurer and Supervisor!
To the establishment and to Wagner, this race was never suppose to be a contested race! Wagner received his coronation shortly before Christmas and there was never any thought that he would have to fight another Republican for what was regarded as his seat! It was just assumed that the red-carpet would be laid out for Don Wagner and he was not expecting to have to answer for the amnesty letter that he participated in and for his do nothing record in the State Assembly.
The public employee labor Unions that spent well over $200,000 attempting to elect Wagner, must also be extremely disappointed today! The Unions were always terrified of John Moorlach because of his pension reform record and because they knew he was a fiscally conservative CPA, who understood the dire predicament this state is in, a predicament that has been largely caused and exacerbated by those very same Unions!
These public employee labor unions better be prepared to face a State Senator who won’t be bought off or manipulated! We can trust that John Moorlach will represent our interests when he arrives and his priorities will no doubt be our priorities in Sacramento!
Last night’s victory of the solid fiscal conservative John Moorlach, was a victory for the taxpayers and for those concerned about the future of our state! We finally have a real advocate in Sacramento, a statesman who will make an effort everyday to fight those interests who seek to destroy our children’s future!
I could not be prouder of John Moorlach for all that he and his family have been through to take on these corrupt forces and I can’t be prouder of the way he ran his campaign, a campaign that was conducted with dignity and a commitment to the truth!
Also, I couldn’t be prouder of all the wonderful Patriots in Orange County who rolled up their sleeves everyday to pitch in and help! This was truly a grassroots effort and a victory that we can all collectively be proud of!
Below, I have two video clips from last night to share with you. First, John and his supporters’ reaction when the final returns came in around 10:30p. last night. Then, I’ve pasted John’s victory speech and his gratitude to all of his loyal supporters. The sound quality of the video is somewhat poor, so I encourage you to raise the volume and to listen carefully!
In closing, let’s not underrate the significance of what happened last night! I believe this victory marks the very first time that the grassroots Tea Party in O.C. took on the GOP establishment in a local election and won! Not only did we take on the establishment, but we took on the powerful Unions simultaneously!
The significance of such a victory is something that shouldn’t be lost on any of us and we should be very proud of all of our hard work to move this particular seat sharply to the right! We should also be proud for sending such a powerful message!
Read and watch below! Also, check out the pics from last night and read John’s victory e-mail to his supporters from this morning!

(From Moorlach’s Campaign update from this morning-3/18/15)
I ran for State Senate because so many people said three things to me. “You did a great job as County Supervisor — Thank you!” “We’re going to miss you.” “Can’t you run for something else?”
By yesterday afternoon, a fourth phrase started repeating over and over: “We’re praying for you!”
How to describe last night? All I can say is that it proved the power of prayer. People could not believe the onslaught of negativity being thrown my way. We decided to take the high road and the voters responded.
Let me share some campaign analysis. We knew we’d be attacked and that we would be heavily outspent. So, we launched our communications at a point in time when we knew we could have the best chance of matching the other side. That meant giving up the first 10 days or so.
The absentee ballots were released at 8:05 p.m. and had me at 49.7 percent. Coming in under 50 percent would mean another two months of continued balderdash from my main opponent and his labor union allies. That’s when I had my conversation with the OC Register, which was under a deadline, followed by the Daily Pilot.
At 9:30 p.m., the first one-third of the polling results were released and I moved up to 49.8 percent. Those that voted at the polls were favoring me by a strong margin. At 10:00 p.m., the next one-third of the votes moved me up to 49.9 percent.
Our strategy played itself out, as the early returns gave us 49.7% of the vote, but everything that came in thereafter gave us an average of 54.5% of the vote, putting us over-the-top. At 10:30 p.m., with the last one-third of the precincts reporting, I went over 50 percent plus one.
My headquarters was packed with supporters that stayed until this final release. The reaction was a loud cheer of approval. Everyone was screaming and had their hands stretched out to the ceiling with joy. You would have thought someone scored a goal in the last few minutes of a World Cup Soccer Championship game. It was glorious. And, it was an answer to many prayers.
After thanking my family and supporters and taking photos, I finally had a chance to be interviewed by the Voice of OC. What a night!
The number of texts I received was incredible. And the phone calls continue to come in. I’ll attack my e-mails soon.
The next chapter of my life started last night. It should be fun to see what happens next. I want to thank you for your thoughts and prayers, for your contributions and your volunteering to write your friends, to walk precincts, to address envelopes, and to call voters. Everyone played a critical role in this victory and you have ownership in the results. We did it and I am most grateful. John Moorlach
